2023, a truly extraordinary year in terms of quantity and quality of releases. But for its dramatic waves of layoffs and closures, it will be remembered as the period that laid bare the structural fragility of today's gaming industry. We saw Microsoft finalize its purchase of Activision-Blizzard after protracted legal battles, but the launch of Starfield on Game Pass did not affect the overall balance, and that is unlikely to happen unless more exclusives are released by in-house studios. Sony, for its part, is navigating uneasy waters: forced to rethink its future strategy entirely and with no successful GAAS buffering the expenses, the all-Japanese interim management has already torpedoed two of the lowest-performing PlayStation Studios and is pondering slowing down with AAA titles, focusing instead on lower budget brackets to increase productivity and profitability. Basically, Nintendo's model to emerge from a quagmire in which PS5 acts as a veritable winch, with mind-blowing sales but not entirely justified by future prospects. Meanwhile, the Big N is preparing to announce a Switch 2 that persistent rumors have it coming out by 2024. (EDIT: slipped to Q1 2025)
